For still water patterns the 2 & 2.5mm beads are best suited For tying on #16 & 18 hooks. The 3 & 3.5mm beads are best suited to tie on #8 & 10 hooks. The 4mm & larger size beads are suited for tying larger woolly bugger patterns on #6 hooks.
On saltwater patterns where you are using the beads on rolling bead type patterns and to add weight to the fly, the 2.5mm and 3mm are the most preferred.
